Triene eicosanoids are formed from eicosapentaenoic acid, which have a beneficial effect on the circulatory system. Prostacyclin I₃ and prostaglandin E₃ expand the lumen of blood vessels and have anti-aggregating (anticoagulant) properties. An additional effect of Prostacyclin I₃ is to increase the level of cAMP, which in turn relaxes the smooth muscles of the blood vessels.
